Inside Our Workshop: How a Batch of High-Chrome Impellers Gets Checked

Customers sometimes ask what happens to a wear part between being poured and being boxed. The short    answer: more checking than the casual observer expects. Here is the routine we follow on a typical    batch of high-chrome impellers.

After casting and heat treatment, each part is checked for hardness against the specified band.    Chemistry is confirmed from the furnace batch record so the "high chrome" label reflects the actual    alloy, not just the name. Key dimensions are measured against the drawing — particularly the fits    that decide whether the part seats correctly on the shaft and in the casing.

For rotating parts we also look at balance. An unbalanced impeller shortens bearings and seals, so    dynamic balancing is part of the process rather than an optional extra. Finally, the parts are    cleaned, coated for transit, and packed with the documentation that travels with them.

None of this is exotic, but it is the difference between a part that "should fit" and one that does.    We would rather spend the time in the workshop than have a customer discover a problem during an    unplanned shutdown.
